چکیده

Languages of declarative logic programming diier from other modal nonmonotonic formalisms by lack of syntactic uniformity. For instance, negation as failure can be used in the body of a rule, but not in the head; in disjunctive programs, disjunction is used in the head of a rule, but not in the body; in extended programs, negation as failure can be used on top of classical negation, but not the other way around. We argue that this lack of uniformity should not be viewed as a distinguishing feature of logic programming in general. As a starting point, we take a translation from the language of disjunctive programs with negation as failure and classical negation into MBNF|the logic of minimal belief and negation as failure. A class of theories based on this logic is deened, theories with protected literals, which is syntactically uniform and contains the translations of all programs. We show that theories with protected literals have a semantics similar to the answer set semantics used in logic programming , and investigate the expressiveness of these theories.

Frame Logic under Answer Set Semantics

Frame logic is well known as a useful ontology modeling formalism, mainly appreciated for its object-oriented features and its nonmonotonic variant, capable to deal with typical nonmonotonic features such as object oriented inheritance. This paper presents a preliminary work defining a framework for coping with frame-like syntax and higher order reasoning within an answer set programming enviro...

Knowledge Forgetting in Circumscription: A Preliminary Report

The theory of (variable) forgetting has received significant attention in nonmonotonic reasoning, especially, in answer set programming. However, the problem of establishing a theory of forgetting for some expressive nonmonotonic logics such as McCarthy’s circumscription is rarely explored. In this paper a theory of forgetting for propositional circumscription is proposed, which is not a straig...

the Scope of Reasoning: Preliminary Report

Existing formalisms for default reasoning capture some aspects of the nonmonotonicity of human commonsense reasoning. However, Perlis has shown that one of these formalisms, circumscription, is subject to certain counterintuitive limitations. Kraus and Perlis suggested a partial solution, but significant problems remain. In this paper, we observe that the unfortunate limitations of circumscript...

Properties of maximal cliques of a pair-wise compatibility graph for three nonmonotonic reasoning system

In this paper we define the notion of a compatibility relation so as to have a common framework for three nonmonotonic reasoning systems: normal logic programming, extended logic programming, and a restricted form of default logic. We show some properties of the maximal cliques of the pair-wise compatibility graph givn by the relation between the rules of the various reasoning systems. Properti...
